  • Cookie cutters
  • Cooling rack
In the medium bowl, mix the baking powder and flour. Add it to the creamed mixture in the mixer bowl 1 cup at a time. Mix it well before adding the next cup. Stop the mixer once in a while and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a scraper.
When all the flour and baking powder has been added and mixed in, spoon the dough onto a rolling sheet or board that has been sprinkled lightly with flour. Form the dough into a big ball with your hands. Then pat it to flatten it slightly. If the dough seems too soft or sticky, put it back in the bowl. Cover it with plastic wrap and let it sit in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or so.
Use the roller to roll the dough about 1/4 - 1/2 inch thick.
Cut dough with cookie cutters that have been dipped in flour. Use a spatula to carefully move the cookies to an ungreased cookie sheet.
Using pot holders, carefully put the sheet on the center rack of the oven. Bake for 5 - 6 minutes, or until the edges just get golden brown.
Take the hot cookie sheet out of the oven. Set it on a cooling rack.

Let the cookies cool on the pan for a minute. Then use a spatula to carefully move them to a cooling rack. Let cookies cool completely before icing them.

Mix all the ingredients in a mixer bowl. Beat at low speed for 7 - 10 minutes, until the icing forms peaks when you dip a spoon into it and pull it back out. Add food coloring, if you want
Using the No. 2 tip, pipe icing around the edges of the cookies. Note: Ask an adult to help with this step.

Thin the remaining icing with a little water, adding it a tablespoon at a time. Fill in top of cookie, letting icing flow to edges.

  • 3 Tablespoons meringue powder
  • 4 cups icing sugar
  • 1 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 6 Tablespoons water
  • Mixer with large bowl

Edible Flower Cupcakes

Make or buy your favorite cupcakes.

Decorate cupcakes with clean, dry edible flowers from the grocery store's produce department. You can use lavender, violets, pansies or carnations.

Check your local library or the Internet for more information about edible flowers. Have an adult help you. Not all flowers are edible. Some flowers are toxic.

It is safest to use flowers from the produce department. Even some"edible" flowers can make you sick if they have been sprayed with fertilizer or insecticide.

To sugar the flowers before you put them on the cupcakes: Use a paintbrush to brush the edges of the petals with egg white. Sprinkle with extra-fine granulated sugar (or berry sugar). Let dry for a short while.

Store decorated cupcakes in the refrigerator until serving.

Another Idea: Decorate with Candy

Decorate cupcakes with candy or gummy flowers and butterflies.

Frosted Butterfly Sugar Cookies

Make or purchase your favorite sugar cookie dough. Roll out dough and cut with butterfly or flower cookie cutters.
