Scrapbooking Party

Scrapbooking has swept across the country in recent years. Women and girls of all ages have discovered how much fun it is to decorate pages with photos and mementos while chronicling their family's special occasions. Creating a scrapbook can be quick and easy, fairly inexpensive, something you can work on in fits and spurts, and creates a finished album you'll love sharing and looking through again and again.

Preteen girls LOVE scrapbooking too! What better way for them to remember their best friends, sports or other activities, family trips and thoughts and dreams than to create a scrapbook? Following is one of our favorite party ideas -- a scrapbooking party! Not only will you give your favorite group of girls a terrifically fun afternoon or evening, but you may just inspire them to learn a craft they'll enjoy for a lifetime!

Have fun!

Scrapbooking Party

Invite your girl's friends to join in the fun of scrapbooking! They will love decorating album pages that show off a photo. Or they could make little pockets to hold secret notes from each other.

Note: Instructions are given for tracing and cutting out patterns, but a paper trimmer, die cuts and punches can also be used.

Cut out with scissors. Click here for the patterns. Option: Use flower and butterfly die cuts and punch centers with circle punches. Glue circle in center of each flower.
For stripes, cut 16 (11-inch) strips of different widths (1/4 - 7/16 inch) from any color except yellow.
For grass, cut two 3/4 x 8-inch strips from green paper. Cut along one long edge with peaks scissors.
Trace one pocket for each guest onto assorted bright colors of paper except yellow. If you have four guests, trace four pockets. Cut out with scissors.
Fold pockets in half. Open pockets and put a thin line of glue along each side edge. Fold pockets closed again. Press together along sides.
To make layered frame for the party photo, cut 4 x 6 1/4-inch rectangle white paper. Glue onto purple paper. Cut around it with ripple scissors, leaving 3/8-inch purple border.
Repeat step 7 to add more layers and borders - first yellow, then green, white and black. Trim edges with seagull scissors and regular scissors.
For name caption, print names of the girls in the photo on 1/2-inch-wide strip of white paper. Cut it as long as needed. Glue it onto yellow paper. Cut around it with ripple scissors, leaving a 3/16-inch yellow border. Glue it onto black paper. Cut around it with regular scissors, leaving a 1/8-inch black border.
Put It All Together

Use marker to write month and day of party on one small flower and year on another. Outline butterfly wings and color body.
Glue stripes first. Glue one green stripe down left side of left-hand page so that it is centered behind "4 ever" flowers. Cut remaining strips in different lengths before gluing them.
Glue grass, photo frame, name caption and pockets to pages.
Peel paper off one dimensional dot. Press it onto center back of flower. Repeat on each flower and butterfly. Press flowers and butterfly onto pages.
With marker, draw squiggly outline with slash marks around name caption, and down sides and across bottom of grass and pockets.
With pencil, draw butterfly's loopy "flight path." Use marker to trace dashed line over penciled line. Erase pencil marks.
For notes, cut 1 3/4 x 2 3/8-inch rectangles from white paper, one for each pocket. Have guests write short notes to each other. Put them in pockets. Use marker to write the name of the person who wrote the note on each pocket.

Make Kits for the Girls

It's a good idea to prepare some of the materials for making the scrapbook pages before your guests arrive. Then your girl and her friends will have more time for the really fun part - decorating their pages!

Put enough supplies for each person in one plastic bag. Follow our suggestions here for what to do ahead of time. Place the rest of the supplies on the table for everyone to share.

In each guest's kit, include:

  • One 4 1/4 x 6 1/4-inch paper rectangle. Have your guests use this to plan where to put the party photo on the page. (Label it "Photo" with a marker if you want.) Take a picture of all of everyone at the party. Afterward, have copies made and give one to each girl to add to her scrapbook pages. Option: Take instant photos at the party.
  • Stripes: Sixteen 11-inch paper strips, 1/4 - 7/16 inch wide, cut from five assorted bright colors.
  • Grass: Two 3/4 x 8-inch strips green paper.
  • Flowers: Seven large flowers and seven small ones cut from a mixture of brightly colored papers.
  • Flower centers: Seven large circles and seven small ones cut from yellow paper.
  • Butterfly: One butterfly cut from pink paper.
  • Pockets: If you have four people at your party, include four pockets in each kit. Cut them from a mixture of brightly colored papers.
  • Notes: One 1 3/4 x 2 3/8-inch piece of white paper for each pocket.
Option: For larger parties, set up different workstations. For example, have the punches at one station, paper trimmer or decorative-edge scissors at another, etc.
